THE most famous windmill in the world is not in Holland but in a shabby square in one of the seedier areas of Paris. Like the Eiffel Tower, the Moulin Rouge red windmill celebrates its th birthday this year and is as much of a French institution. Its colourful history is peopled by legendary figures, from the artist Toulouse-Lautrec to singer Edith Piaf.

The original house, which burned down in , was co-founded in by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller , who also owned the Paris Olympia.
